Moose Steam locomotive

Winter ticks hunt in packs. When one larva snags a passing moose, hundreds will tag along. They feed all winter until the moose rubs itself bald trying to scrape them off.

Climate change lengthens the questing period. Ticks that used to drop onto April snowpack now land on bare ground, lay eggs, and multiply. Some moose carry 90,000 ticks. Calves die at 70% rates.

This moose rails north, seeking winters cold enough to kill ticks. The engine was used to haul timber south. Now it hauls moose north.

There's less north every year.
